Unified Communications Moving Up, but Slowly | Interviews ...

Carl Weinschenk spoke with Michael Finneran, the president of dBrn Associates. Finneran is the author of InformationWeek Reports' "State of Unified Communications," which was released last week.

?

Unified communications is still making progress, and that progress seems slower than what it should be based on the tremendous benefits it can pay. Michael Finneran tells IT Business Edge blogger Carl Weinschenk that too many businesses think deploying unified communications requires purchasing an IP PBX. The next stage, he says, is embedding communications tools inside productivity applications.

?

?Collaboration is one of several elements in a real unified communications solution. With unified communications you are describing a mix of voice, video, email, text and collaboration with a single shared interface. So there seems to be a confusion.?

Michael Finneran
President
dBrn Associates

Weinschenk: What is the research about?
Finneran: InformationWeek Analytics does annual surveys of different topics, and unified communications is one of them. We try to keep questions consistent and have a baseline to compare year to year. Comparing year over year to the study done in April of 2010 suggests that UC deployments are increasing. The companies that deployed and utilized UC jumped from 30 to 36 percent ? but confusion seems to reign. Thirty-one percent said they have plans to deploy in 24 months. There is slow but steady progress.

?

Weinschenk: Why do you say there is confusion?
Finneran: Given some of the descriptions of what people thought UC was, I am not sure they were talking about deploying anything but an IP PBX. One of the questions we asked was what the key technologies for unified communications for them was on a scale of 1 to 5. The top 3 turned out to be collaboration, VoIP and unified messaging.

?

Weinschenk: What is the significance of that?
Finneran: If things like VoIP and unified messaging are at the top of the list ? and ahead of core UC functions like IM and presence ? the community is misunderstanding what UC really is. I think the vendor marketing has distorted the users? view, particularly the bigger companies like Cisco. They are moving away from even using the term "unified communications." They are using "collaboration."

Israel to release withheld funds to Palestinians (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel announced Wednesday that it would release tens of millions of dollars of tax funds owed to the Palestinians, ending a standoff that the Palestinians say has caused grave damage to their fragile economy.

The move followed heavy pressure from the United States, United Nations and Europe on Israel to free the money. Israel collects the tax funds for the Palestinians and transfers the money each month, in accordance with partial peace agreements from the 1990s.

Israel froze this month's transfer to punish the Palestinians for their efforts to win U.N. recognition of their independence. The Israeli decision came after the Palestinians were accepted to the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO ? part of a broader effort for admission as a full member state at the United Nations.

Israel accuses the Palestinians of trying to bypass peace talks through the campaign. It says that a Palestinian state can be established only through a negotiated peace deal.

Since the UNESCO victory, the Palestinian campaign at the U.N. has stalled due to deadlock in the Security Council, which must approve full membership. Palestinian officials have not yet decided how to proceed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he decided to release the money because the Palestinians appear to have suspended their "unilateral moves." It said the decision would be "reassessed" if the Palestinians resume these steps.

On Tuesday, however, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reaffirmed that he remains committed to the bid for U.N. membership, saying recognition was the Palestinians' "legitimate right."

The two conflicting statements could lead to future disputes over the tax transfers and other areas of cooperation, reflecting deep mutual mistrust.

Israel has also hinted that it would end the payments if Abbas carries out a reconciliation agreement with the rival Hamas militant group. The Palestinians hope to hold elections next May that will end a rift that has left them with rival governments since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.

The tax funds from customs duties and other fees are needed by the Palestinian government, the largest single employer in the Palestinian territories, to pay tens of thousands of workers, as well as security forces, which have won praise for cooperation in halting militant attacks on Israelis.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, a U.S.-educated economist, warned that if the funds were not restored, he would be unable to pay upcoming salaries and said the Israeli punishment was causing heavy economic damage. The Palestinians have also complained that Arab nations have not fulfilled their pledges of economic aid.

Fayyad noted Wednesday that Israel gets a fee for collecting the Palestinian funds. "Secondly, it's very crucial to the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian economy," he said.

Donor nations and even Israeli security officials urged Netanyahu to release the money, saying cash shortfalls destabilize the limited self-rule government in the West Bank.

The international community's Mideast envoy, Tony Blair, welcomed the Israeli decision and said the payments should be "transferred on a regular and predictable basis."

"This is Palestinian money which is critical to sustaining" the Palestinian Authority, he said. "Withholding these funds only benefits those who oppose peace and Israeli-Palestinian cooperation."

Israeli-Palestinian peace talks have been stalled for three years.

The Palestinians say they will not resume negotiations unless Israel halts settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? captured territories where the Palestinians hope to establish a state. Israel says talks should resume without preconditions.

Abbas met Wednesday in Amman, Jordan with the head of Israel's parliamentary opposition, Tzipi Livni. She urged him to abandon unilateral moves and return to negotiations, according to a statement from her office.

Jerusalem, Nov. 30, 2011 What distinguishes information processing with conscious awareness from processing occurring without awareness? And, is there any role for conscious awareness in information processing, or is it just a byproduct, like the steam from the chimney of a train engine, which is significant, but has no functional role?

These questions - which have long puzzled psychologists, philosophers, and neurobiologists - were recently addressed in a study by Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers and published by the journal Psychological Science.

The study was headed by Prof. Leon Deouell from the Hebrew University's Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC) and Department of Psychology and Prof. Dominique Lamy from the Department of Psychology at Tel Aviv University, and conducted by research student Liad Mudirk of Tel Aviv University with collaboration of research student Assaf Breska from the Hebrew University.

We are not consciously aware of most of the input that hits upon our sensory systems. Yet subjectively, conscious awareness dominates our mental activity. "One of the dominant theories in cognitive sciences and psychology posits that parts of the information perceived without awareness may be processed to a certain extent," says Prof. Deouell. "Yet to bind the different parts of a complex input into something meaningful and coherent requires conscious awareness.

To test this theory, the research team ran a study in which they presented participants with pictures of natural scenes including some human action, like a picture of basketball players jumping to reach a ball.

In other tests, the same scenes were presented -- except that the central object was replaced by another, unlikely object. For example, the basketball was replaced by a watermelon.

The participants viewed the pictures through a mirror stereoscope, a simple device that allowed the research team to present the pictures to only one eye. At the same time, the other eye viewed rapidly flickering patterns of colors which drew the subjects' attention, so that the participants were not aware for many seconds that anything was presented to their other eye. This allowed the researchers to measure how long it takes normal and unusual scenes to "win the competition" against the flickering pattern and break into awareness.

"We found that participants became aware of the unusual scenes earlier than to the usual scenes," commented Deouell. "The conclusion was that even before the participants were aware of the existence of the picture, the semantic relationships between parts of the scene were interpreted."

The study shows that, counter to previous theories, integration is not the prerogative of conscious awareness but is achieved even without awareness. When and why then do we need conscious awareness?

The findings of this research suggest that when the results of the integration between parts of the input are incompatible with expectations or prior knowledge, awareness is required in order to account for the conundrum. Thus, the study expands the realm of unaware processes, yet shows that conscious awareness is not a meaningful luxury - it allows us to deal with novel and unexpected situations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge's stern voice broke the silence of a Los Angeles courtroom: "Money for madness medicine," he said before sentencing Dr. Conrad Murray to the maximum four years behind bars for Michael Jackson's death.

"Absolutely no sense of fault, and is and remains dangerous" to the community, Judge Michael Pastor said as he delivered a nearly half-hour tongue lashing that denounced Murray as a greedy, remorseless physician whose gross negligence killed the King of Pop.

Pastor said Murray sold out his profession for a promised fee of $150,000 a month and accused Murray of committing a "horrific violation of trust" when he agreed to give Jackson a powerful anesthetic every night as an unorthodox cure for insomnia.

Murray will likely serve less than two years in county jail, not state prison, because of California's overcrowded prisons and jails. Sheriff's officials said he will be housed in a one-man cell and be kept away from other inmates.

The tall, imposing Murray, who has been in jail for three weeks, was allowed to change into street clothes ? a charcoal gray suit and white shirt ? for court. But he wore prison issue white socks and soft slippers.

Jackson's family said in a statement read in court that they were not seeking revenge but a stiff sentence for Murray that served as a warning to opportunistic doctors. Afterward, they said they were pleased with the judge's sentence.

"We're going to be a family. We're going to move forward. We're going to tour, play the music and miss him," brother Jermaine Jackson said.

After sentencing, Murray mouthed the words "I love you" to his mother and girlfriend in the courtroom. Murray's mother, Milta Rush, sat alone on a bench in the courthouse hallway.

"My son is not what they charged him to be," she said quietly. "He was a gentle child from the time he was small."

Of her son's future, she said, "God is in charge."

Murray, 58, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a six-week trial that presented the most detailed account yet of Jackson's final hours, a story of the performer's anguish over being unable to sleep.

Pastor was relentless in his bashing of Murray, saying the physician lied repeatedly and abandoned Jackson when he was at his most vulnerable ? under the anesthesia that Murray administered in an unorthodox effort to induce sleep.

"It should be made very clear that experimental medicine is not going to be tolerated, and Mr. Jackson was an experiment," he said.

Propofol is supposed to be used in hospital settings and has never been approved for sleep treatments, yet Murray acknowledged giving it to Jackson then leaving the room on the day the singer died.

As for defense arguments that Jackson tempted his own fate when he demanded propofol, Pastor said, "Dr. Murray could have walked away and said no as countless others did. But Dr. Murray was intrigued with the prospect of this money-for-madness medicine."

Pastor said Murray was motivated by a desire for "money, fame and prestige" and cared more about himself than Jackson.

The doctor was deeply in debt when he agreed to serve as Jackson's personal physician for $150,000 a month during his comeback tour. The singer, however, died before Murray received any money.

"There are those who feel Dr. Murray is a saint and those who feel he is the devil," Pastor said. "He is neither. He is a human being who caused the death of another human being."

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff implored Pastor to look at Murray's life and give him credit for a career of good works. "I do wonder whether the court considers the book of a man's life, not just one chapter," Chernoff said.

The judge responded: "I accept Mr. Chernoff's invitation to read the whole book of Dr. Murray's life. But I also read the book of Michael Jackson's life, including the sad final chapter of Dr. Murray's treatment of Michael Jackson."

Chernoff suggested that Murray is being punished enough by the stigma of having caused Jackson's death. "Whether Dr. Murray is a barista or a greeter at Walmart, he is still the man that killed Michael Jackson," he said.

The judge said one of the most disturbing aspects of Murray's case was a slurred recording of Jackson recovered from the doctor's cell phone. His speech was barely intelligible and Murray would say later Jackson was under the influence of propofol.

Pastor suggested Murray might have been planning to use it to blackmail Jackson if there was a falling out between them. "That tape recording was Dr. Murray's insurance policy," Pastor said.

Defense attorneys never explained in court why he recorded Jackson six weeks before his death. In the recording, Jackson talked about the importance of making his shows on the comeback tour "phenomenal."

Jackson's death in June 2009 stunned the world, as did the ensuing investigation that led to Murray being charged in February 2010.

Murray declined to testify during his trial but did participate in a documentary in which he said he didn't consider himself guilty of any crime and blamed Jackson for entrapping him into administering the propofol doses.

"Yikes," the judge said. "Talk about blaming the victim!"

Murray's attorneys presented 34 letters from relatives, friends and former patients to win a lighter sentence. They described Murray's compassion as a doctor, including accepting lower payments from his mostly poor patients.

In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors cited Murray's statements to advocate for the maximum term. They also want him to pay restitution to the singer's three children ? Prince, Paris and Blanket.

The exact amount Murray has to pay will be determined at a hearing in January.

In the meantime, sheriff's officials said Murray will serve a little less than two years behind bars. A recent change in California law requires Murray to serve his sentence in county jail rather than state prison.

District Attorney Steve Cooley said he was considering asking Pastor to modify the sentence to classify the crime as a serious felony warranting incarceration in state prison.

"This is going to be a real test of our criminal justice system to see if it's meaningful at all," Cooley said.

(AP) ? Seven years of tantalizing potential that often lead to frustrating results at Illinois ended Sunday when the school fired coach Ron Zook following his team's historic late-season collapse.

Illinois started the season 6-0 but finished with a six-game losing streak, finishing with a 27-7 defeat at Minnesota on Saturday.

According to STATS, LLC, the Illini are the first FBS team to open the regular-season with six straight wins, and close it with six losses in a row.

Zook took the Illini to their first Rose Bowl since the 1980s and last season led the team to its first bowl win in more than a decade. The strong start this season had fans thinking they could contend in the Big Ten, and the Illini could still go to a bowl game. The program has had back-to-back bowl appearances since 1991 and '92.

But Zook also had five losing seasons in Illinois ? finishing with a 34-51 record ? and leaves the Illini in a year in which their only Big Ten wins were against Northwestern and Indiana.

Athletic Director Mike Thomas said Zook left Illinois football better than he found it. But Illinois, Thomas said, needs a new leader who can build a team more suited to competing in the Big Ten.

"To me, really, you have to have success within your own conference," Thomas told reporters. "The last seven years we won roughly 32 percent of our Big Ten games," adding that Illinois had a winning record against only Indiana over that period.

Thomas said he met with Zook Sunday morning and informed the coach of his decision.

At his own news conference, Zook didn't take questions, but thanked a room packed with players, family and friends for what he called seven special seasons. Occasionally stopping to gather himself.

"I think our program is very close; I really do," the 57-year-old Zook said. "We just didn't finish a few games here and there."

Most of the roughly two-dozen players gathered at Zook's news conference declined questions, but senior linebacker Trulon Henry said the team believed it let Zook down through the losing streak.

"I'd jump off a cliff for him," said Henry, who Zook recruited to Illinois after Henry served time in prison for an armed robbery but will graduate at the end of the current semester. "A lot of coaches wouldn't have brought me here."

With two years left on his contract, Zook will receive a $2.6 million buyout.

Thomas said a search will start right away to find a successor, though he wouldn't discuss potential candidates. Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will be interim head coach, the first-year athletic director said.

Zook came to Illinois in 2005 after being fired in his third season at Florida. He replaced Ron Turner, now an Indianapolis Colts assistant coach.

The 2007 season was Zook's high point at Illinois. The Illini were Big Ten runners-up and upset an undefeated Ohio State team in Columbus that was shooting for a perfect season and a national title.

But only two of Zook's Illinois teams finished with winning records, 2007's 9-4 squad and last year's 7-6 Texas Bowl team.

Thomas praised Zook for the elevating Illinois, which had four losing season in five years before he arrived. But Thomas, who became AD last summer, also alluded to Zook's uneven tenure at Illinois.

"It is imperative that our program shows some consistency and competes for championships, and I think a change in coaches can help us get there sooner. I wasn't here seven years ago when Ron Zook took over as coach, but it's clear the program is in better shape than what he inherited."

Zook went 2-9 in his first season at Illinois but Illini fans had the promise of better times ahead. Known as an extraordinary recruiter, Zook's first signing class included highly regarded Chicago quarterback Juice Williams, who started most of the next four seasons.

After another two-win year ? Williams' freshman season ? Zook and the Illini delivered on that promise with the trip to the Rose Bowl. Illinois was blown out in Pasadena, 49-17 by USC, but fans thought good times were on the horizon.

Illinois followed up that surprisingly good season, though, with two bad ones, going 5-7 and 3-9.

Zook kept his job amid speculation that he wouldn't, but was forced to fire virtually his entire staff and hire offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and Koenning. With their help Illinois went 7-6 in 2010.

This season, though, left fans with even deeper doubts.

Illinois took advantage of an early schedule that included five home dates and opponents such as Arkansas State and South Dakota State to roll to 6-0. Then came the losses.

While the defense mostly held up well this season the offense struggled. Illinois at one point went three games without scoring a first-half point. The Illini averaged 11 points a game through the losing streak after putting up almost 35 a game through their unbeaten start.

And Illinois' special teams ? a point of emphasis for Zook, who has been an NFL special teams coach ? were often bad. The Illini were last in the Big Ten this season in both kickoff and punt returns and near the bottom of the conference in both kickoff and punt coverage.

Zook brought both that NFL pedigree and the reputation as a tireless worker and recruiter to Illinois.

He peppered his press conferences with references to coaches like Steve Spurrier with whom he'd worked, and once told a reporter, "Can you imagine how much you could get done if you didn't have to eat or sleep?"

But he also brought baggage with him from Florida.

Gator fans were never sold on him as the replacement for Spurrier. Zook won in each of his three seasons in Gainesville, but never enough, going 8-5, 8-5 and 7-4.

And he had the distinction of being perhaps the first target of a serious Internet campaign to fire a coach. The Web site Fireronzook.com went up shortly after he got the job. He also reportedly got into a shouting match during the 2004 season on the Florida campus with members of a fraternity after a fight between them and some of his players.

Bill Clinton: Newt Gingrich Is 'Being Rewarded For Thinking'

Bill Clinton praised Newt Gingrich while explaining his recent surge in the polls.

"I think he?s doing well just because he?s thinking, and people are hungry for ideas that make some sense," Clinton told NewsMax. "He's being rewarded for thinking."

He also praised the candidate's debate performance, though he declined to predict a primary win.

"I still think Romney comes across as strong and forceful and knowledgeable and I thought Perry had a better debate last night, he did much better than he's doing," he said.

The former president's praise is a surprise considering their contentious past. During Clinton's presidency, then-House Speaker Gingrich fought Democrats hard on such issues as Medicare and welfare reform. He also pushed for Clinton's impeachment.

More recently, though, Clinton and his allies have offered positive feedback on the GOP candidate.

"He is brilliant," Dick Morris, a former Clinton campaign strategist, told HuffPost's Sam Stein. "He's a very skilled adversary."

Clinton called Gingrich "creative, flexible, and brimming over with new ideas" in his book and, in September, predicted a comeback for GOP hopeful.

New Hampshire Union Leader backs Gingrich (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The New Hampshire Union Leader endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in Sunday editions, signaling that rival Mitt Romney isn't the universal favorite and that the state's largest newspaper could reset the contest there with six weeks to go before voters cast their ballots.

"We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing," the newspaper wrote in an editorial that was as much a promotion of Gingrich as a discreet rebuke of Romney.

"We don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job," the newspaper continued.

Romney enjoys a solid leads in New Hampshire polls and remains at the front of the pack nationally. A poll released last week showed him with 42 percent support among likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire. Gingrich followed with 15 percent in the WMUR-University of New Hampshire Granite State poll.

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas posted 12 percent support and former Utah Gov. John Huntsman found 8 percent support in that respected survey.

Those numbers could shift based on the backing of The Union Leader, a newspaper with a conservative editorial page that proudly works to influence elections in the politically savvy state, from school boards to the White House.

"We don't have to agree with them on every issue," the newspaper wrote in an editorial that ran across the width of the front page. "We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear."

While Romney enjoys solid support in national polls, a sizeable pack of Republicans have shifted all year from candidate to candidate in search of an alternative to the former Massachusetts governor. That led to the rise ? and fall ? of potential candidates such as Huntsman, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Yet with six weeks until New Hampshire voters cast their ballots, The Union Leader's move could shuffle the race there and give Gingrich another boost. In recent weeks, he has seen a surge in some polls as Republicans start to ask themselves: which candidate is best positioned to take on President Barack Obama?

As the public started tuning in, Gingrich kept posting solid debate performances and he found his stride on a national stage, the former Georgia lawmaker began rebuilding his campaign. In New Hampshire, he brought on respected tea party leader Andrew Hemingway to lead his efforts and his team has been contacting almost 1,000 voters each day.

Hemingway's team of eight paid staffers in New Hampshire has been adding more than 100 volunteers each day, campaign officials said. Gingrich's team already has lined up leaders in the major cities and has started identifying representatives in each ward in the state.

Gingrich also has opened three offices in New Hampshire ? in Manchester, the state's biggest city; in Dover in the eastern part of the state; and in the North Country's Littleton ? and plans two more.

Gingrich hasn't yet begun television advertising and fastidiously refused to go negative on his opponents.

Yet The Union Leader's backing could give him a nudge in New Hampshire and provide a steady stream of criticism.

Four years earlier, the newspaper threw its support to Sen. John McCain's bid and used Page One opinion columns and editorials to boost him ? and criticize Romney. In the time since, Romney has worked to court Union Leader Publisher Joe McQuaid, who often publishes columns on the newspaper's front page under his signature.

"The Union Leader's style is we don't just endorse once," McQuaid told The Washington Post in 1999. "We endorse every damn day. We started endorsing Reagan in 1975 and never stopped."

Romney and his wife, Ann, had dinner with the McQuaids at the Bedford Village Inn near Manchester, hoping to reset the relationship earlier this year. Yet it didn't prove enough and McQuaid's newspaper seemed not to appreciate the outreach.

"Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate," the editorial said. "But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running."

(AP) ? New Hampshire's largest newspaper on Sunday endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the 2012 GOP presidential race, signaling that rival Mitt Romney isn't the universal favorite and potentially resetting the contest before the state's lead-off primary Jan. 10.

"We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing," The New Hampshire Union Leader said in its front-page editorial, which was as much a promotion of Gingrich as a discreet rebuke of Romney.

"We don't back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job," the editorial said.

Romney enjoys solid leads in New Hampshire polls and remains at the front of the pack nationally.

John Huntsman found 8 percent support in that survey.

Those numbers could shift based on the backing of The Union Leader, a newspaper with a conservative editorial stance that proudly works to influence elections, from school boards to the White House, in the politically savvy state.

The endorsement, signed by publisher Joseph W. McQuaid, suggested that the only state-wide newspaper in New Hampshire was ready to again assert itself as a player in the GOP primary.

"We don't have to agree with them on every issue," the newspaper wrote in an editorial that ran across the width of the front page. "We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear."

While Romney enjoys solid support in national polls, the large pack of Republicans has shifted all year from candidate to candidate in search of an alternative to the former Massachusetts governor. That led to the rise, and fall, of potential challengers such as Huntsman, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Yet with six weeks until the primary, The Union Leader's move could shuffle the race and further boost Gingrich. In recent weeks, he has seen a surge in some polls as Republicans focus more closely on deciding which candidate they consider best positioned to take on President Barack Obama.

But a Gingrich rival, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, said the endorsement points to how changeable the New Hampshire contest is.

"A month ago for Newt Gingrich to have been in the running to capture the Manchester Union Leader endorsement would have been unthinkable," Huntsman told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday." ''I think it reflects, more than anything else, the fluidity, the unpredictability of the race right now."

As voters started focusing more on the race, Gingrich has turned in solid debate performances and found his stride on a national stage. He has rebuilt his campaign after a disastrous summer that saw many of his top aides resign en masse and fundraising summaries report million in debt.

Gingrich's team has lined up leaders in the major cities and has started identifying representatives in each ward in the state.

Gingrich has opened offices in Manchester, New Hampshire's biggest city, along with Dover in the eastern part of the state and in the North Country's Littleton. He plans two more.

Gingrich hasn't begun television advertising and has refused to go negative on his opponents.

Yet The Union Leader's backing could give him a nudge in New Hampshire and provide a steady stream of criticism.

Four years earlier, the newspaper threw its support to Arizona Sen. John McCain's bid and used front page opinion columns and editorials to boost him and criticize chief rival Romney. In the time since, Romney has worked to court Union Leader publisher Joe McQuaid, who often runs columns on the newspaper's front page under his signature.

"Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate," McQuaid wrote. "But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running."

The Animal That Teaches

Carl Zimmer surmises?that sharing knowledge is what makes us human:

It?s certainly true that teaching comes naturally to us humans. There?s no culture on Earth without teachers. But just because something?s easy doesn?t mean it?s not special. And in the animal kingdom, teaching is exceedingly rare. In fact, it?s not clear whether any other animal can teach.

I know this may come as a surprise, but it does so because we tend to mix up teaching and learning. A young chimpanzee can learn how to smash nuts on a rock by watching an older chimpanzee in action. And when she grows up, her own children can learn by watching her. But in these situations, the students are on their own. They have to watch an action and try to tease apart the underlying rules.?
