No, Snapchat Isn?t About Sexting, Says Co-Founder Evan Spiegel

snapchat-2?The minute you tell someone that images on your server disappear, everyone jumps to sexting.? Evan Spiegel laughed and leaned back into his chair during his first sitdown interview since his iPhone app Snapchat blew up over the last month. Snapchat?is #12 on the free iOS photo app charts in the U.S. and?just scored some mainstream media attention in The New York Times.? Why? Snapchat is a photo-sharing app that changes privacy norms in a very novel way. The free app allows users to send others photos and control how long receivers can see them. These photos last for up to 10 seconds, before they disappear forever. ?It seems odd that at the beginning of the Internet everyone decided everything should stick around forever,? Spiegel said. ?I think our application makes?communication a lot more human and natural."

Foxconn Chief Confirms The Apple iTV

fanboysIn an interview published by China Daily today, Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn, confirms the massive manufacturing company is making preparations for an Apple television set called iTV. Gou also states that neither development nor manufacturing has begun. Apparently, per China Daily at least, the television set will have an aluminum construction, Siri voice controls and FaceTime video calling. This is the most solid report to date of the long-fabled Apple HDTV. The product has been rumored for the last several years. So far both Steve Jobs and now Tim Cook have called the Apple TV, the company's set-top box, a hobby. But it seems the company is almost ready to turn its avocation into an occupation.

Come iOS 6, Apple Will Reportedly Kiss Google Maps Goodbye

maps2Google's map data has been baked into the iOS Maps app since the days of the first, thick, aluminum-backed iPhone, but that may no longer be the case once iOS 6 hits the streets. Unnamed sources told 9to5Mac that the Cupertino company would instead take that opportunity to reveal their own Maps application, and those early reports paint a pretty impressive picture. Astute readers may recall that Apple has been on something of a mapping company shopping spree these past few years -- what began with the purchase of Placebase in 2009, continued with Poly9 in 2010, and culminated with Apple snapping up C3 Technologies late last year.

Critter & Guitari Buck the Trend with Hardware That Works Like a Music App [Video]

We write about music apps because they enable all sorts of amazing things that manufacturers could never do with hardware - or if they could, it would be prohibitively expensive. For example, if you had to buy a special MP3 player to display lyrics, you probably wouldn't do it - and yet that same function turned into software attracted over a million people in April alone. CTIA 2012: a look back at our favorite devices

Image

CTIA 2012 is wrapping up and we thought we'd spend a few minutes reminiscing about some of the more interesting devices we had a chance to see for the first time or that were launched here. Unfortunately for us -- and thereby for you, too -- the show lacked the bite we've seen at previous events, in fact it barely registered a nibble. We did catch up with five products we'd like to highlight so follow on after the break for our recap.

Rangers' Josh Hamilton joins select club with 4-homer game vs. Orioles (+video)

The Texas Rangers outfielder drove in eight runs with four swings of the bat Tuesday night.

Not even Babe Ruth was able to do what Josh Hamilton of the Rangers did Tuesday night against the Orioles in Baltimore - hit four home runs in a single game - as Texas beat the O's, 10-3.

Hamilton hit three of the blasts to center field and one to left off three different Oriole pitchers at Camden Yards. All the home runs were two-run shots. He ended up going five-for-five at the plate, adding a fifth-inning double.

The Rangers center fielder enjoyed how his teammates reacted as much as hitting the home runs, ESPN.com reported.

"I was saying after I hit two that I had never hit three in a game before. What a blessing that was," Hamilton said. "And then to hit four, it was just an awesome feeling to see how excited my teammates got.

"It reminds you of when you're in Little League and a little kid, and just the excitement and why we play the game. Things like that. You never know what can happen. It was just an absolute blessing."

The 'Big League Stew' Yahoo! Sports blog points out that Hamilton is the 16th major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Hamilton joins such greats as Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt in the select four-homer game club.

Afterwards, Hamilton, a early AL M.V.P. candidate, put his career night in perspective, according to MLB.com.

"Obviously, other than the World Series, it's the highlight of my big league career," Hamilton said.

Hamilton leads the major leagues in hitting with a .406 average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Rangers currently lead the American League West Division with a 20-10 record.
