Looks like Pluto will have a moon named 'Vulcan'

The votes are in for the SETI Institute's Pluto Rocks Poll, and, thanks in part to William Shatner, Mr. Spock's home planet is a clear winner.?

This photo provided and annotated by NASA/Hubble Space Telescope shows the five moons in their orbits around Pluto. The smallest moons ? no more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) across ? were discovered in that past two years and are currently referred to as P4 and P5.

After 450,324 votes cast over the past two weeks, Vulcan is the clear winner with a landslide 174,062 votes? due in no small part to a little?Twitter intervention by Mr. William Shatner,?I?m sure.

In other words??yes,?the Trekkies have won.

During a Google+ Hangout today,?SETI Institute?senior scientist Mark Showalter ? who discovered the moons and opened up the poll ? talked with SETI astronomer Franck Marchis and MSNBC?s Alan Boyle about the voting results. Showalter admitted that he wasn?t quite sure how well the whole internet poll thing would work out, but he?s pleased with the results.

?I had no idea what to expect,? said Showalter. ?As we all know the internet can be an unruly place? but by and large this process has gone very smoothly. I feel the results are fair.?

As far as having a name from the Star Trek universe be used for an actual astronomical object?

?Vulcan works,? Showalter said. ?He?s got a family tie to the whole story. Pluto and Zeus were brothers, and Vulcan is a son of Pluto.?

And what can you say when even?Mr. Spock agrees?

The other winning name, Cerberus, is currently used for an asteroid. So because the IAU typically tries to avoid confusion with two objects sharing the same exact name, Showalter said he will use the Greek version of the spelling: Kerberos.

The next step will be to submit these names to the International Astronomical Union for official approval, a process that could take 1?2 months.

(Although who knows? maybe Bill can help move that process along as well?)

Family missing at sea: An unsolved mystery (+video)

Family missing at sea: A family of four, including two children, issued a distress call from their sailboat Sunday. But they're still missing at sea. Who are they? Where are they?

By Staff,?Associated Press / February 26, 2013

The family radioed for help, from a position 68 miles off the coast of Monterey, Calif.

Authorities have turned to the public in hopes of identifying a family that sent a series of distress calls saying their boat was sinking far off the Central California coast.

"There is still no information on where the boat was coming from, where it was going or who the people on board are," said Coast?Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz.

The unidentified family of four ? including two children under 8 ? had been sailing a small vessel Sunday west of Monterey Bay. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of rough seas in the area, and water temperatures typically are in the 40s and 50s, making long-term survival difficult.

The group made its first distress call late Sunday afternoon, Coast?Guard Lt. Heather Lampert said. Investigators used the boat's radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey.

The boaters reported that their 29-foot sailboat was taking on water and the electronics were failing.

Crews planned to search by sea and air through the night Monday to find the family, who said in the calls that they were fashioning a raft from a cooler and a life-preserver ring before they lost contact with the Coast?Guard.

"We will just saturate the search area with as many assets as we can, so we can hopefully rescue them," Lutz said.

The Coast?Guard released one of the family's recorded distress calls (http://bit.ly/W90cyv ), in hopes that it would lead to new information from the public that could help in the search. So far the agency has received no reports of missing persons in the case.

The agency believes the boat's name was Charmblow. In the crackling recording, a man's voice is heard saying, "Coast?Guard, Coast?Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship."

Investigators determined from the broken distress calls that the family included a husband and wife, their 4-year-old son and his cousin, Lampert said.

The boat's location initially was reported farther north, but Lampert said investigators now believe the call came from west of Monterey Bay, about 100 miles south of San Francisco. The boat did not have a working GPS system.

Calls to harbors in California have failed to locate the boat, and database searches have come up empty, Lampert said. The Coast?Guard was expanding its search to Hawaii, the Seattle area and north into Canada.

Eager Israelis send invites to Obama ahead of tour

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is coming to town, and it seems like everyone in Israel wants to be a part of the historic visit.

From West Bank settlers to peace activists, universities to municipalities, Israelis of all stripes are sending out invites to lure Obama their way in bids to bend his ear on the issues that could decide the fate of the region.

Obama's visit, his first to Israel as president, comes during rising tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, years of deadlocked peace efforts and a tense relationship between the president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Just beneath the surface is the feeling of many Israelis that up to now, Obama's administration has been unsympathetic to Israel, frequently criticizing its policies toward the Palestinians. The U.S. considers its policies balanced, noting that it has opposed resolutions critical of Israel at the U.N.

Despite the differences, the U.S. remains Israel's main world ally.

While Obama's schedule has not been made public, officials and ordinary Israelis alike appear eager to exploit the upcoming tour, also expected to take him to the West Bank and Jordan next month. The Israeli government has released a logo and slogan for the trip, naming it "Unshakable Alliance," and is scouting places for Obama to visit.

Mixed feelings are coloring the invitations.

One has come from Benny Kashriel, mayor of the West Bank Jewish settlement of Maaleh Adumim, near Jerusalem. Kashriel wants to host Obama in a contested area known as E-1, where Israel envisages construction of more than 3,000 apartments.

Building in the area is contentious because the Palestinians say it would hinder movement between east Jerusalem, their hoped-for capital, and the West Bank. Kashriel said he would take Obama to a hilltop overlooking the area and rebut the Palestinian argument.

"I have no doubt I will convince him to see the truth," said Kashriel, who delivered an invitation through the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Israel revived the E-1 plans late last year in response to the Palestinians' successful bid for U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war. The announced plans, on the back burner for years, drew unusually sharp criticism from some of Israel's staunchest allies ? including the U.S.

The issue of Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank in general has drawn much criticism from the U.S. and stands at the heart of a four-year impasse in Mideast peace efforts. The Palestinians have refused to negotiate while Israel continues to build in settlements on the lands they seek for their state. Netanyahu says talks should resume without any preconditions.

Obama has rejected settlements as illegitimate but has done little to force Israel to halt construction.

Appealing to Obama to restart the peace talks, Israelis on the dovish end of the political spectrum have put out a plea on Facebook for Obama to deliver a grand "Speech for Peace" in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square, where then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who signed the first interim accords with the Palestinians, was assassinated by an ultranationalist Israeli opposed to his peace moves.

Yaniv Shacham, a manager of the page, which has attracted more than 21,000 "likes," said Obama's ability to reach out to the people, both in his public appearances in the U.S. and on visits abroad, could resonate with Israelis.

"If he knew that he could fill the square with hundreds of thousands of Israelis ... he would see there are many Israelis who support the ideas and ideals he represents and certainly the renewal of peace talks," Shacham said.

Academic institutions have been vying to host the prestigious guest. One is Bar-Ilan University, the site of a landmark 2009 speech by Netanyahu in which he declared his support for a two-state solution with the Palestinians. That speech ended years of Netanyahu's opposition to Palestinian independence, but his policy offers less than earlier Israeli proposals that did not result in a peace accord.

The mayor of Haifa, a mixed Israeli-Arab port city in northern Israel, has invited Obama to see "the only city in the world where Jews and Arabs have had peaceful relations for more than 100 years," setting an example for Israelis and Palestinians.

At least 20 Facebook groups ? each called "Obama come to..." ? have sprouted up, inviting Obama to different locations. Some are cheekier than others, like a sports stadium that hosts a team known for its anti-Arab fans, or a Palestinian town in the West Bank that holds weekly protests against Israel's separation barrier.

Neither the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv nor the White House responded to questions about Obama's schedule and whether he might accept any of the invitations pouring in.

One likely venue could be the Knesset, Israel's parliament, where high-profile visitors including Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Anwar Sadat, the late Egyptian leader who reached a historic peace accord with the Jewish state, all delivered addresses. Israeli media have said officials are undecided because of the possibility of hard-line lawmakers heckling the president, but the acting speaker has asked that Netanyahu invite Obama anyway.

The visit appears to be generating less excitement in the West Bank. Palestinians believe peace efforts are doomed unless the U.S., as Israel's closest ally, pressures Israel to make concessions. The White House has said Obama is not planning any major peace initiative on this trip. The Palestinian Authority refused to comment on the trip on Monday.

Eytan Gilboa, an expert on Israel-U.S. relations at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv, said Obama is unlikely to accept the invitation of the settlement mayor. A speech aimed at the Israeli public is more likely, but it probably won't happen in the open-air Rabin Square because of security concerns, he said.

"Everything has its connotations and constellations and contexts, so the choice of locations is made very cautiously," said Gilboa, noting that every place Obama visits will be watched carefully and interpreted endlessly. "The purpose of the places he visits will be to leave with an improved image."

(AP) ? Far from the courtroom drama that has gripped South Africa, the family of Oscar Pistorius' slain girlfriend has struggled with its own private deluge of grief, frustration and bewilderment.

The victim's relatives also harbor misgivings about efforts by the Olympian's family to reach out to them with condolences.

Pistorius, meanwhile, spent Saturday at his uncle's home in an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the South African capital, after a judge released him on bail following days of testimony that transfixed South Africa and much of the world. He was charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day, but the athlete says he killed her accidentally, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

"We are extremely thankful that Oscar is now home," his uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said in a statement that also acknowledged the law must run its course. "What happened has changed our lives irrevocably."

The Pistorius family took steps to lower its profile on social media after someone hacked into the Twitter account of his older brother, Carl, family spokesman Janine Hills said.

"Carl did not tweet this afternoon, out of respect to Oscar and Reeva," Hills said in a statement. "We are busy cancelling all the social media sites for both Oscar's brother and his sister."

Mike Steenkamp, Reeva's uncle, told The Associated Press that the family of the double-amputee athlete initially did not send condolences or try to contact the bereaved parents, but had since sought to reach out in what he described as a poorly timed way. After Pistorius was released on bail in what amounted to a victory for the defense, Arnold Pistorius said the athlete's family was relieved but also in mourning "with the family" of Reeva Steenkamp.

"Everybody wants to jump up with joy," Mike Steenkamp said, speculating on the mood of Pistorius' family after the judge's decision. "I think it was just done in the wrong context, completely."

A South African newspaper, the Afrikaans-language Beeld, quoted the mother of Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, law school graduate and participant in a television reality show, as saying the family had received a bouquet of flowers and a card from the Pistorius family.

"Yes, but what does it mean? Nothing," June Steenkamp said, according to the Saturday edition of Beeld. She also said Pistorius' family, including sister Aimee, a somber presence on the bench behind the Olympian during his court hearings in the past week, must be "devastated" and had done nothing wrong.

"They are not to blame," June Steenkamp said. According to Beeld, she said she had hoped to plan a wedding for her daughter one day.

In an affidavit, 26-year-old Oscar Pistorius said he was "absolutely mortified" by the death of "my beloved Reeva," and he frequently sobbed in court during the several days during which his bail application was considered. However, prosecutor Gerrie Nel, suggested in a scathing criticism that Pistorius was actually distraught because his vaunted career was now in peril and he was in grave trouble with the law.

"It doesn't matter how much money he has and how good his legal team is, he will have to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to lie for him," Barry Steenkamp, Reeva's father, told Beeld.

"But if he is telling the truth, then perhaps I can forgive him one day," the father said. "If it didn't happen the way he said it did, he must suffer, and he will suffer ... only he knows."

Barry Steenkamp suffered "heavy trauma" at the loss of his daughter and his remarks to the newspaper partly reflect how he is working through it, said his brother, Mike Steenkamp.

Steenkamp was cremated in a funeral ceremony on Feb. 19 in her family's hometown of Port Elizabeth on South Africa's southern coast. Mike Steenkamp delivered a statement about the family's grief to television cameras, at one point breaking down in tears.

The three-story house where Pistorius is staying with his aunt and uncle lies on a hill with a view of Pretoria. It has a large swimming pool and an immaculate garden.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect and had his legs amputated at 11 months. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medalist, but he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meter race and on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.

Cargill, Mexico settle trade dispute over corn syrup

Cargill Inc. and the Mexican government have settled a long-running free-trade dispute over the corn syrup business.

In December, Minnetonka-based Cargill took Mexico to court, claiming the government had failed to pay a $95 million arbitration award stemming from the dispute. Cargill sued in U.S. District Court for southern New York to enforce the award.

Cargill confirmed Friday that the matter had been settled. The company has long claimed that Mexican trade barriers have hurt its high-fructose corn syrup business.

In 2009, an international arbitration panel concluded that Mexico had breached the North American Free Trade Act by erecting trade barriers, thus increasing the price of corn syrup. The panel awarded Cargill damages of $77.3 million, plus costs of $2 million.

Mexico appealed the decision to a federal court in Canada, which had legal jurisdiction over the arbitration case. Canadian courts, though, let the Cargill award stand, ending Mexico?s appellate route in Canada.

When Cargill filed suit in New York, it claimed that it expected Mexico to pay but said it had to preserve its legal rights before they expired. By then, the award amount had grown to $94.6 million with interest.

Failure to pay debt as directed on divorce decree

My divorce was finalized in 2011, My ex is a memeber of the US Army, and so am I. he owes me about $13K for debt I helped pay off for him. In the divorce decree, he was to pay me back for the debt and money he owed me, which he had taken from my account, as well as payments he failed to make under my name.

I keep running into issues where he will make a payment for 3 months, then stop because he has to change bank accounts due to failure of managing his money. At this point, getting his chain of command is not an option since we are divorced. What can I do or file to make sure I continue to get payments from my ex, without having to track him down and suggest to take him to court so he can straighten up.

We do not live close from each other, and the state i filed for is his home of record. Can someone please help

TripAdvisor voters crown Italian beach as world's best

LONDON -- A remote beach in Sicily, Italy, was named on Thursday as the best beach in the world by a survey of travellers, while a UK beach managed to sneak into the top 10.

Rabbit Beach came top in the first annual awards for the world's best beach based on millions of reviews and ratings by international tourists on the TripAdvisor website.

Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa off the south coast of Sicily, was described as an unspoiled nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat and one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs.

Second place went Grace Bay, Providenciales, in the Turks and Caicos, while Australia's Whitehaven Beach in the state of Queensland came third.

"Rabbit Beach's is clearly a big hit with travellers and it's easy to see why with its stunning turquoise water and white sand," said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw.

In recent years the southern Italian island of Lampedusa has been in the news as the landing point for tens of thousands of refugees and would-be migrants during the Arab Spring uprisings.

Thousands of migrants risking the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea in small overcrowded fishing boats died as a result of shipwreck, harsh conditions at sea or a lack of food and water, setting off a crisis that threatened to overwhelm the island.

Shaw said this award would be a boost for Sicily's tourism.

Beaches in Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Aruba also featured in the top 10, praised for their white sands and swaying palm trees.

But one surprise in the list, coming 10th, was Rhossili Bay in Swansea, Wales, which beat beaches in Hawaii, the Caribbean and more exotic locations to make the top 10 list.

Rhossili Bay, on the Gower Peninsula, stretches for three miles (5 kms) and its vast expanse of sand backed by sand dunes and towering cliffs make it popular with surfers, paragliders and ramblers.

"We are delighted, but not surprised, that Rhossili Bay has been acknowledged ... We hope that many more visitors continue to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty," David Phillips, leader of the City and County of Swansea, said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for TripAdvisor said the best beach awards were based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on the website gathered over a 12-month period. Following is TripAdvisor's list of the Top 10 beaches in the world:

1. Rabbit Beach, Sicily - Italy

2. Grace Bay, Providenciales - Turks and Caicos

3. Whitehaven Beach, Queensland - Australia

4. Baia do Sancho, Fernando de Noronha - Brazil

5. Flamenco Beach (Playa Flamenco), Culebra - Puerto Rico

6. Playa de las Catedrales, Ribadeo - Spain

7. Lopes Mendes Beach, Ilha Grande - Brazil

8. Horseshoe Bay Beach, Southampton Parish - Bermuda

9. Eagle Beach - Aruba

10. Rhossili Bay, Rhossili, Swansea - Wales, UK

Next came a CME, which shot off to the right out into space. And then, the sun treated viewers to one of its dazzling magnetic displays -- a phenomenon known as coronal rain.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) watched as a medium-strength flare erupted from?the sun?on July 19, 2012. The blast also generated the enormous, shimmering plasma loops, which are an example of a phenomenon known as "coronal rain," agency officials said.

"Hot plasma in the corona [the sun's outer atmosphere] cooled and condensed along strong magnetic fields in the region," NASA officials wrote in a description of the four-minute?video of solar plasma "rain", which NASA released Wednesday (Feb. 20).

"Magnetic fields are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, and outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface," they added.

The $850 million SDO spacecraft recently marked three years in space. It launched on Feb. 11, 2010, kicking off a five-year prime mission to provide incredibly detailed views of the sun, solar flares and other space weather events.

SDO has delivered thus far, capturing more than 100 million images of our star as of late last year. Some of the spacecraft's most memorable shots over the last year are?highlighted in another video, which NASA released last week to celebrate the mission's birthday.

But SDO has done more than just shine a light on the sun. The spacecraft has also helped scientists better understand comets, especially "sungrazers" like Comet Lovejoy, which survived a death dive through the sun's corona in December 2011.

And scientists used SDO to learn more about Venus' atmosphere during the planet's "transit" across the sun's face, from Earth's perspective, in June of last year. The Venus transit transfixed skywatchers and researchers around the world, as the next one won't come until 2117.

SDO isn't the only spacecraft keeping tabs on the sun, which is currently in an active phase of its 11-year activity cycle, with a peak expected later this year. NASA's twin Stereo probes also provide daily views of our star, as does the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency.

Spectacular Koh-i-Noor diamond in the late Queen Mum?s crown is not being given back to India, PM David Cameron says

THE PM was grilled yesterday about returning the Crown Jewels? spectacular Koh-i-Noor diamond to India ? and declared: ?They?re not having that back.?

The priceless 105-carat gem is in the late Queen Mum?s crown ? which Kate will wear when Wills becomes King.

It was seized and presented to Queen Victoria in 1850.

Last year descendants of a Sikh maharaja sued to get it back. But Mr Cameron insisted it will be staying put.

The PM said: ?I certainly don?t believe in returnism.?

Tiny tweezers and their big influence on bustling proteins: Scientists investigate molecular 'clothespins'

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Tiny molecular tweezers have a remarkable impact on bustling proteins: Three research groups from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), the Chemical Genomics Centre of the Max Planck Society in Dortmund and the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung in M?lheim found that the molecular tweezers designed by Professor Frank Kl?rner at the UDE can be used to regulate protein -- protein interactions by selectively trapping certain residues of the protein -- and stick like a clothespin.

The research groups of Thomas Schrader (UDE), Christian Ottmann (Chemical Genomics Centre) and Elsa Sanchez Garcia (MPI f?r Kohlenforschung) believe that this might be a promising approach for applications in medical research, as the water soluble tweezers act without inducing toxicity or explicit side effects.

The scientists have tested their small tweezers on proteins that have influence on many processes in the human body. "We also wanted to know how they work," says Dr. Elsa Sanchez Garcia, leader of a Max Planck research group at the Max Planck Institut f?r Kohlenforschung. The chemists have found out that although their tweezers prefer to bind at the amino acid lysine, the protein surrounding of the lysine influences the trapping of the tweezers. Thus, with computer simulations Dr. Sanchez Garcia and her colleague Kenny Bravo Rodriguez have shown which type of lysine the tweezers prefer -- and why that is the case. Their work also allowed to lay down rules for predicting the behavior of the tweezers in the presence of proteins with several lysine residues.

Although the tweezers research is at early stages, their potentiality makes it worth for medical researchers to have a closer look at these results. The 14-3-3 adapter proteins (14-3-3) that the scientists used for their experiments are small recognition proteins that influence many physiological processes by binding their targets via short peptide sequences and modulating their function. For instance, they are able to stabilize certain tumor suppressors. Because of their important role in many biological processes, 14-3-3 proteins are prospective therapeutic agents against severe disorders, such as cancer.

The three research groups published their findings in the Nature Chemistry.

Developer preview of touch-based Ubuntu is called that for a reason (hands-on video)

Developer preview of Touchbased Ubuntu is called that for a reason handson video

Ubuntu's Touch Developer Preview was originally put forward as something for "enthusiasts" as well as developers. Well, having been hands-on with the code that will be made public tomorrow, we'd say it requires enthusiasm a-plenty -- perhaps even amateur coder quantities of the stuff. That's because a lot of core functionality is still missing from the OS, such as the ability to play music files or import real-life contacts, and there's a long way to go if it's to be signed off as "code complete" in October.

On the other hand, this is really just a statement of the obvious. Canonical has been pretty clear that the main purpose of this early release is to lure in developers and get them to contribute to the fundamental stages of the project. Furthermore, the video after the break shows that there are many aspects of the OS which work fine -- such as the gallery and video apps, the "side stage" and HUD features, and also general performance on the Nexus 10's hardware. The UI merges some Kindle- and Windows 8-esque features with things that are totally original -- like responsive design which allows the exact same OS and apps to run on a phone, tablet, TV or desktop. We certainly hope it generates interest -- not only among developers but also among device manufacturers who want to do more than just talk about differentiation.

How it will we find the winner?

This year broadcaster IBA is pulling out all of the stops when it comes to KDAM 2013, the Israeli national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. This year 30 songs will compete in three Semi-Finals on the 26th, 27th and 28th of February with 10 qualifying for the Grand Final on the 7th of March.

We previously revealed details of the songs participating in all the Semi-Finals.

You can also hear all the songs from the first Semi Final by looking at our previous article.

From each of the Semi-Finals 3 songs will qualify to the Grand Final, whilst the songs placing 4th in each show will compete for just one wildcard place in the Second Chance round on the 3rd of March.

Israel will participate in the second Semi-Final of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Malm?, Sweden on the 16th of May.

Israel has had a long and relatively successful history at the Eurovision Song Contest, having won in 1978, 1979 and 1998. Now the country that brought us among others Dana International is back, and this time in style.

What do you think of the songs?

Search for victims after huge K.C. blast

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Cadaver dogs searched through the smoldering rubble of a Kansas City restaurant after a gas explosion sparked a massive blaze Tuesday evening in an upscale shopping district.

More than a dozen people were injured in the blast and resulting fire, which occurred just after 6 p.m. and completely destroyed JJ's restaurant. There were no reports of fatalities by Tuesday night, though authorities cautioned that could change because it was unclear how many people were inside at the time of the blast.

Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi said cadaver dogs were called to the scene because of the size of the conflagration.

"I would always fear there are fatalities in a scene like this," Berardi said.

He said results of the search would take hours and that he expected his crews would be working the scene through the night.

City Manager Troy Schulte said it appeared an accident by a utility contractor had caused the blast, and a statement from utility Missouri Gas Energy late Tuesday reiterated that possibility, but Berardi and others cautioned that the cause was still being investigated.

"This investigation is ongoing," Berardi said. "We do have reports that there was an odor of gas earlier. But, again, this investigation needs to be concluded before we want to speculate on any of that."

Indeed, the smell of gas was very strong in the area hours after the blast. Berardi said the utility stopped the flow of gas about 8 p.m., and utility crews could be seen working in the area after the blast.

Witnesses noted street signs indicated utility work was being done in the area, and a JJ's employee said the restaurant was open but undergoing renovations.

Mayor Sly James was at the scene after the blast, praising the work of first responders.

"The first thing we need to be concerned about is the people that are injured," James said.

Police Sgt. Tony Sanders said the manager of JJ's restaurant was unable to account for three people, but it was unclear whether they were caught in the blaze or had left earlier.

The University of Kansas Hospital was treating six people injured in the blast, said spokesman Bob Hallinan. He said one person was in critical condition, two were in serious condition and two others were expected to be released. He said all of those injuries were traumatic, such as broken bones, rather than burns or smoke inhalation. The final patient there was a burn victim who was transferred from Truman Medical Center, Hallinan said.

Dr. Marc Larsen, medical director of the emergency room at St. Luke's Hospital, which is near the scene of the fire, said they had treated eight people, six of whom were walk-ins with minor injuries. He said two males were in critical condition and would be kept overnight. He said one had extensive burns and another had facial trauma.

Jim Ligon, a JJ's bartender, said he wasn't working Tuesday night but started getting texts and calls from co-workers minutes after the explosion. He said the incident happened during the peak of weekday happy hour, when there is typically anywhere from 15 to 45 people in the bar area as well as three to five tables of diners at the restaurant.

"JJ's has a small staff, a family feel," said Ligon, 45, of Kansas City, Mo. "You see the same 100 people all the time ? a bar and restaurant for regulars. We're just really hoping we come out of here OK in terms of injuries."

Ligon said he was on his way Tuesday night to meet up with co-workers at another bar in town to talk about the incident.

The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols. Based on the architecture of Seville, Spain, it includes retail, restaurants, apartments and offices.

Pletcher's posse dominates Kentucky Derby trail

No trainer has started more than five horses in a Kentucky Derby.

The way the Derby prep season is shaping up, that could change. Todd Pletcher has a shot at saddling six or seven of the 20 3-year-olds who will be led into the starting gate at Churchill Downs on May 4.

"Right now, at this stage, I can't recall having this depth," the trainer said during a conference call Tuesday, adding that great expectations in mid-February can turn quickly by the first Saturday in May. "But we are hopeful we're able to keep it going."

Pletcher's posse of prospects is led by Shanghai Bobby, who remains No. 1 in the AP's latest Run to the Roses list of Top 10 Derby contenders.

Also on the list are No. 4 Violence, No. 5 Verrazano and No. 8 Overanalyze. Other Pletcher 3-year-olds considered to be on the Derby trail include Capo Bastone, Delhomme, Palace Malice and Revolutionary.

"At this point, it's as many as six or seven," he said, "but none of them have gotten there yet."

Pletcher and two Hall of Famers, D. Wayne Lukas and Nick Zito, share the record of five starters in a Derby. Only Lukas came out a winner, with Grindstone in 1996.

The new Top 10 has one change ? Super Ninety Nine moves in at No. 7 for trainer Bob Baffert after an 11? -length romp in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Monday.

This weekend, two to of Pletcher's charges are ready to run: Violence is the morning-line favorite in a field of 11 for Saturday's Fountain of Youth and Palace Malice has a chance to step up in Saturday's Risen Star at the Fair Grounds, a race that drew a field of 15.

As for Shanghai Bobby, the colt had his first workout Sunday since his first career loss in the Holy Bull last month. Pletcher said the son of Harlan's Holiday ran "extremely well" in the Holy Bull, but was tired for a week after the race. Now "his energy level is good and he's back to serious training."

Shanghai Bobby will be on a weekly workout regimen leading to his final Kentucky Derby prep, the Florida Derby on March 30.

This weekend marks a huge increase in points awarded for the first four finishers in designated prep races. The breakdown is 50-20-10-4 for both the Fountain of Youth and the Risen Star. If more than 20 are entered for the Derby, the field will be determined for the first time by point totals rather than graded stakes earnings.

It was a good holiday weekend for Baffert, who spent a few days vacationing in Mexico while his horses were winning in Arkansas and California. In addition to his win with Super Ninety Nine at Oaklawn, his Shakin It Up won the seven-furlong San Vicente at Santa Anita.

Here's our Top 10:

1. Shanghai Bobby (Todd Pletcher, Rosie Napravnik): 2-year-old champion went 4 furlongs in 49.60 on Sunday at Palm Meadows, his first work since running second in Holy Bull. ... Went 5-for-5 at 2, including wins in Hopeful, Champagne, BC Juvenile. ... Next start: Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park, March 30. ... Future Derby Wager odds: 14-1.

2. Itsmyluckyday (Eddie Plesa Jr., Elvis Trujillo): Holy Bull winner has plenty of time to get ready for final prep. ... Next workout set for Friday in Florida. ... Owned by Laurie Plesa and Trilogy Stable. ... Next start: Florida Derby. ... Odds: 13-1.

3. Goldencents (Doug O'Neill, Kevin Krigger): Sham winner worked 6 furlongs in 1:13.40 last week at Santa Anita. ... Trainer of Derby, Preakness winner I'll Have Another has another contender in He's Had Enough (set to run Saturday in Fountain of Youth). Co-owned by Rick Pitino. ... Next start: San Felipe, Santa Anita, March 9. ... Odds: 20-1.

4. Violence (Pletcher, Javier Castellano): All eyes will be on heavily favored colt in 3-year-old debut. ... Won all three races last year, including CashCall Futurity (Dec. 15). ... Next start: Fountain of Youth, Gulfstream Park, Saturday. ... Odds: 13-1.

5. Verrazano (Pletcher, John Velazquez) ... Worked 4 furlongs in 48.05 at Palm Meadows on Sunday. ... Has a pair of wins at Gulfstream by a combined 24 lengths .... Next start: Tampa Bay Derby, Tampa Bay Downs, March 9. ... Odds: 11-1.

6. Flashback (Bob Baffert, Julien Leparoux): Robert B. Lewis winner worked 4 furlongs in 47 4/5 a week ago ... Son of Tapit is 2-for-2. Next start: San Felipe. ... Odds: 12-1.

7. Super Ninety Nine (Baffert, Rafael Bejarano): Looked super in winning Southwest by 11 1/4 lengths over slop Monday. ... Now 2-for-2, but next start could be back at Oaklawn or home at Santa Anita. ... Next start: Undecided. Odds: 47-1.

8. Overanalyze (Pletcher, Velazquez): Worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.40 Sunday at Palm Meadows. ... Remsen winner staying warm until return to trip to New York. ... Next start: Gotham, Aqueduct, March 2. ... Odds: 33-1.

Long Distance, Valentine's Day Does Not Have to Suck : The ...

Posted by SamanthaGS on Monday, February 18, 2013 ? Leave a Comment?

For those of us in long distance relationships, the holiday that can be the hardest is Valentine?s Day. You end up third-wheeling with your parents, at a Forever Alone Party with your single friends or curled up on the couch watching a Nicholas Sparks Movie Marathon on ABC Family. Either way, it?s usually not your idea of a fun way to spend a day focused on the ones you love. Here are some ways to make LDRs easier during Valentine?s Day and all year round.

A Dress-Up Skype Date:
If you?re anything like me, you know that pajamas are the usual garb for a Skype date. I hardly ever make an effort when Skyping with my boyfriend, just because I know that he thinks I?m pretty no matter what. So why not mix it up a little? Dressing up, though it seems silly, shows that you care enough about each other to try. It will be like those moments before prom or your first date when you both see each other making an effort: nostalgia can be a good thing sometimes.

Letters and Packages:
I know that this is a little reminiscent of Dear John, but seriously, when was the last time you received a handwritten letter? It may be old-fashioned and very slow, considering our space-age ways of communication. Texting, e-mail, Facebook and even the cell phone relieve some of the stress of being far away from your loved one, but they can also take away some of the romance. As college students, we love getting things in our mailboxes, so try and surprise your special someone every once in a while with a letter or even a small care package.

Do Things Together: Sounds impossible, right? Think again. It might sound lame, but during the Super Bowl, a Patriots game or even a favorite movie, call one another and watch together. If you think about it, people in short distance relationships do not spend all of their time together talking, so don?t sweat the silences. Just watch the movie together and maybe talk about it afterwards. A good game or movie can sometimes spark a really good conversation.

Be Sweet: Some days are harder than others. When you?re feeling icky or your significant other is down in the dumps, be nice. My favorite ways include retelling the day that you met, remembering good times and planning for future good times. Sometimes you can get caught up thinking about either being alone or just being without that person, and you forget that the loneliness won?t last forever. You will see him/her soon?if not on break, then whenever you can. ?

BBC journalists go on strike over job cuts

LONDON (AP) ? BBC journalists walked off the job Monday in a 24-hour strike to protest job cuts at the broadcaster.

Staff mounted picket lines outside of the BBC's studios in central London and around the country. Programs went on, but many shows were canceled, including the flagship morning news radio program "Today."

National Union of Journalists general secretary Michelle Stanistreet said poor decisions by the BBC leadership were leading to quality journalism being compromised. The union says 2,000 jobs are at risk in BBC cost-cutting. Many will be eliminated through attrition, but about 30 jobs are targeted for compulsory layoffs.

The union said members across the BBC, including the World Service, are at risk of compulsory redundancy.

The BBC said in a statement that it was disappointed by the union's actions. It said it had no choice but to meet savings targets that will require job cuts.

The BBC is funded mainly by a mandatory 145.50 pounds ($228) annual levy on all households with color TVs. Britain's government froze the fee in 2010, and the corporation has been forced to make cuts.

Funeral for Pistorius' girlfriend on Tuesday

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The family of Reeva Steenkamp said Sunday her body was back in her hometown of Port Elizabeth after the model and reality TV contestant was shot dead inside the house of Oscar Pistorius. A private funeral will be held on Tuesday.

Adam Steenkamp, the brother of Pistorius' late girlfriend, told The Associated Press "Reeva is back home."

The family said that Steenkamp, who was shot multiple times and killed at the double-amputee Olympic athlete's home early Thursday, will be cremated in a ceremony closed to the public and the media in the city on South Africa's southern coast.

Pistorius was charged with her murder and is expected to make a second court appearance ? also on Tuesday ? for the start of his bail hearing. He remains in custody in a police station in Pretoria ahead of that hearing.

The 29-year-old Steenkamp was seen laughing and smiling on South African television Saturday night after national broadcaster SABC chose to air the first episode of a reality TV show in which she was featured. Her family said it did not oppose the program being aired because Steenkamp wanted people to see it and a short tribute to her was shown before the episode.

A fellow contestant on the "Tropika Island of Treasure 5" show told AP Television News that Steenkamp "was always making sure everyone was OK."

"Fun, crazy, loving, beautiful, gorgeous. She really was an angel and I still haven't come to terms with what happened," Katleho Molai said of Steenkamp. "I haven't really eaten, I'm struggling to sleep. So it's been really hard to come to terms with what's happened to her."

Performing arts center ahead of schedule - Nevada Daily Mail

(Photo)

The shell of the Ella Maxwell Center for the Performing Arts at Nevada High School is awaiting the completion of the west wall and the installion of the roof to become weather tight. Photo by Ralph Pokorny/Daily Mail

Construction on the Ella Maxwell Center for the Performing Arts is running ahead of schedule and the current estimated completion date is Aug. 21, Aaron Hight, Crossland's construction manager for the project, told the Nevada R-5 Board of Education during a work session before their regular monthly meeting Wednesday.

"That's 31 days ahead of schedule," Hight told the board.

There is still a lot of winter left, so weather can still create construction delays until the roof in installed, he said.

Hight told the board the project is 16.08 percent complete, but that number will go up once the roof is installed and the building is closed in.

Hight said that the concrete for both the upper and lower level stages has been poured.

He told the board that until now they have kept the floor inside the arts center flat to facilitate work, but on Monday they will start digging out the interior of the building so they can pour the floor. That will take three or four days.

"That will take four separate pours for the interior floor," he said,

"The load bearing walls will be completed this month," he said.

Hight told the board they will be bringing in a 220 ton crane in mid-March to put the steel roof supports on the structure.

The crane will be located in Ashland Street, north of the construction site.

Initially Hight told the board that their plan was to have the crane in place between the time students are dropped off at the high school and when they are picked up in the afternoon.

However, R-5 superintendent Dr. David Stephens suggested that since the school break will be from March 10-16 that might be a good time to do this.

"I'll make sure that happens then," Hight said.

He told the board that the floor for the multi-purpose building has been poured and now the work on it is largely at a stand-still until the steel for the building is delivered.

"We will get the steel at the end of March," Hight said.

While waiting for the steel he said they will be able to start work on the masonry walls.

In addition to the work on the performing arts center and the multi-purpose building, Hight said that he has been working with Elliott Hunter, the architect for the projects at the high school, and Stephens on increasing security at all of the district's school buildings.

"Next week we will visit all of the schools and will do the work over the summer," he said.

Hunter told the board they are developing a plan.

"It will mean adding an air lock at most of the schools," he said,

Visitors will be able to enter the first door and then need to be buzzed in the second door, he said.

"It's not bullet proof, but it's the cheapest option," Hunter said.

16-Year-Old Actress Turns Into Stock Day Trader ... - Yahoo! Finance

Rachel Fox isn?t an ordinary 16-year-old. She's already graduated from high school and has been a working Hollywood actress for years, appearing in shows like Desperate Housewives as evil Kayla Scavo and in the film Dream House with Daniel Craig and Naomi Watts. When she?s not on set she can often be found on stage, singing and playing guitar in an indie rock band.

That would be a packed schedule for most of us, but Rachel has another activity that?s a real passion. For the last year-and-a-half she?s been actively day-trading stocks with her own money. She says she's been racking up stellar returns, claiming a 30.4% gain in 2012, versus the benchmark S&P 500 which gained 13% for last year.

While she?s doing it all, she?s also helping teach people about investing via her website FoxOnStocks.com. On the site she updates her thoughts on the markets and posts videos for those new to the game; teaching them how to do the basics like finding quotes and understanding what a stock option is. For now, the blog is just for fun, she has no plans to monetize; just teach others how to invest, the way her Mom taught her.

From the time she was 8-years-old her mother would read to she and her sister from a book on finance that was kept in the house. Even as she was teaching her daughters fundamental investing, Rachel?s mom was warning them about the stock market.

?She had explained that the market is different nowadays; it?s not so ?oh you buy something, you hold it for a long time, and can grow with the company,'? Rachel says in the attached video, casually dismissing 100 years of stock market theory. ?Nowadays we have day traders, institutional investors and people who just rip the market up and make stocks go like crazy.?

Which is why Rachel started trading stocks with virtual money, until she proved to her parents that she had a knack to make smart investments. In November 2011, she began trading using her own income from acting.

?Last year I made 338 day trades,? she says proudly. Trading that often is not just a hobby. Rachel is up at 6:30am every morning, looks through her account, scans headlines and then makes her picks for the day. She uses a standard brokerage account and makes use of an app that enables her to trade on her smartphone.

?The days when I?m working on set in between takes I?ll be on my iPhone trading; it?s a solo project,? she shrugs, ?I?m just doing this.? There?s not a frenetic stock exchange vibe surrounding her at work, just a young actress trading stocks on her phone. Most of her co-workers probably just assume she?s texting the way people her age are ?supposed? to. She doesn't talk about trading with other Hollywood-types; she only shares some investing ideas with her parents on occasion.

Her methodology for stock picking isn?t going to be in one of her mom?s textbooks anytime soon. For the vast majority of her trades she?s going strictly by her gut instinct and technicals, or stock charts. She tries to ignore the news flow that fundamental players live off, and instead watches price action and lets the charts guide her on when to buy and sell.

Her dream targets are companies that have been pushed too far away from their normal trend. It?s what traders call overbought or oversold.

?If the stock is seriously sick with one of those cases I?ll just go right at it,? she says sounding just a little like a grizzled trading floor veteran being channeled through a teenage girl. ?I?ve got some shark instincts.?

Rachel?s best trade so far in 2013 is a short sale on high-end jeweler Tiffany & Co. (TIF). ?The stock kept going up and up and up and was really overbought and I had the instinct,? she explains. After putting on her short position, she woke up the next morning to find a trader?s dream: the shares were collapsing on weak earnings. ?I short sold it and the next morning when I woke up it had dropped $3 or $4; it was perfect,? she says.

Not all trades are wonderful though. Rachel says her first trade was her worst trade. When she was 15-years-old, she got a stock tip from a family friend at Thanksgiving dinner. It was a $2 stock, sure to go to $10 she was told. The stock is now trading under a penny. But the beating she took didn?t make her want to quit; it motivated her to start generating her own ideas.

?I learned not to take stock tips from people because I think it?s so important that you enter and exit trades on your own instinct.?

In the bigger picture Rachel sees no reason why she can?t trade and act at the same time. ?It?s going to be Oscars while day trading,? she says about her future. ?I?m going to be acting until I can barely see anymore and the same with stock trading. I?m going to be stock trading forever.?

She also plans to continue blogging and expanding her video content. The topics she covers aren't just for traders like herself. Rachel wants to give people the basics and let them decide how to best fit it to their personal temperament and goals. ?I?m just doing what my parents did with me. I?m saying ?here?s the market, here?s how it works.??

And she's even tackled questions about her age in a recent blog post. For now, she leave us with some advice you just wouldn't expect from the average teenager:

?Learn how to make your money grow, it is one of the most empowering things you can know.?
